Oslo, July 1, 2025 – Mai Phan, founder and CEO of the Norwegian deep tech company Variment, is one of only 40 female entrepreneurs in Europe selected from among 1,038 applicants for the exclusive Women TechEU program. Women TechEU is a 2-year EU-funded project supporting women leading deep tech startup companies from Europe and Associated Countries. Participants receive 75,000 EUR in funding as well as program mentoring and support.
Variment is revolutionizing training in the health and social care sector
Variment develops AI-based role-playing simulations that help health and social care workers improve their communication and interpersonal skills. Poor communication in the sector currently leads to serious consequences such as misdiagnoses, conflicts, and high turnover rates – all of which come at a significant cost to both services and patients.
Unlike traditional training methods such as VR simulations and in-person courses, Variment offers a solution that is realistic, accessible, and highly scalable. The technology has the potential to cut training costs in half – while also improving quality.
The company has already received support from organizations including Innovation Norway, the Lundin Foundation, Loyal VC, and the Oslo Regional Research Fund. Variment is now running pilot projects in collaboration with both public and private healthcare services in Norway.
A global entrepreneur with local impact
Mai Phan holds a degree in business administration and finance, with a bachelor's from the USA and a master’s from the UK. She has lived on several continents and visited over 25 countries, giving her deep insight into culture, communication, and human interaction – core values she has built into Variment.
Since 2011, Mai has been based in Norway, where she combines international experience with a strong commitment to improving welfare and healthcare services. With the Women TechEU grant, she now has the opportunity to scale Variment’s technology across the rest of Europe – and beyond.
